The Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce has honored Kannapolis City Schools with its 2013 Sustainability Award. The award is given to organizations that use innovative and environmentally sustainable practices to solve problems, save money, and help the environment.

KCS was recognized for its exemplary Energy Management program. The program has saved taxpayers nearly $165,000 and kept 715 metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

KCS began its Energy Management program during the 2010-11 school year. Through its Maintenance Department, KCS hired an Energy Manager who evaluated energy use throughout the district. Based on his recommendations, the system began installing energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems. KCS put in remote thermostat controls that allowed the maintenance department to monitor and manage energy usage from a central location. The system removed fluorescent bulbs from fixtures that had multiple tubes and installed motion detector lights in many places. KCS also made sure doors and windows were closed and lights were turned off in empty rooms. In addition, all building projects that KCS has completed since 2010 have been designed to meet LEED specifications.

The savings that have resulted from our Energy Management program have been dramatic. Despite steep rate increases for water and energy, our overall utility costs have gone down since 2010. Our exact cost avoidance between 2010 and 2013 is calculated at $163,761.59. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has honored two of our schools with national Energy Star Awards for their exemplary energy reduction results. Our carbon footprint also has declined significantly. For example, our reduced electricity usage is equivalent to keeping 715 metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, and our overall energy usage has dropped 19% throughout the district.

The KCS Energy Management program has made the district more sustainable economically and environmentally, and it has helped the community through a reduced carbon footprint and savings to taxpayers.
