Kannapolis City Schools’ School Nutrition Department has earned praise from state inspectors who performed an audit of the program.

The auditors were extremely impressed with the high level of participation in the district's meal program. More than eight out of ten KCS students (82%) eat a school-prepared lunch each day, and 61% of students eat breakfast at school. In addition, the auditors commended the district for offering healthy food choices that students enjoyed eating. The federal inspectors also praised the department's excellent customer service.

Another area where the KCS School Nutrition Department excelled was in record keeping and inventory management. The auditors said the KCS School Nutrition department kept waste to a minimum and made good use of food and resources. Frank Fiorella, who was the lead auditor, commented, “If you could get as close to perfect in one of these comprehensive audits, the KCS School Nutrition Department would be one of them.”

The KCS School Nutrition Department participates in the federal Community Eligibility Program, which allows the district to offer a free lunch and free breakfast to every KCS student each school day.
