Two students from A.L. Brown High School have earned top statewide honors in the North Carolina Skills USA competition. Samuel Jijon-Bacilio and Alexis Graham took home first place honors during the annual State Leadership and Skills conference in Greensboro.

Samuel Jijon-Bacilio won top honors in the Skills USA Culinary Arts competition. As part of the competition, Jijon-Bacilio had to prepare a four-course meal that included both hot and cold foods. Judges evaluated students on their cooking techniques, knife skills, organization, creative presentation, sanitation/safety techniques, and the quality and flavor of the food.

This is the third year in a row that Jijon-Bacilio has taken home first prize in the statewide Skills USA competition. As an A.L. Brown sophomore in 2016, Jijon-Bacilio won the Culinary Arts competition, and in 2017 he finished first in the Restaurant Services competition. Jijon-Bacilio has taken multiple culinary courses at A.L. Brown as part of the school’s fast growing Culinary Arts program.

A.L. Brown High School senior, Alexis Graham, also won first place honors at the North Carolina Skills USA competition. She won in the First Aid-CPR category. As part of that competition, Graham was evaluated on her reactions during a simulated medical emergency where she had to perform CPR and deliver first aid to adults, infants, and children. She also had to take a written exam. All contestants were judged based on the nationally accepted standards identified by the American Red Cross, The American Heart Association, The American Safety and Health Institute, and the National Safety Council.

Both Samuel Jijon-Bacilio and Alexis Graham will now represent North Carolina at the National Skills USA competition in Louisville, Kentucky in June. Both are members of the Skills USA Club at A.L. Brown High School.
