Anthony Jawaun Sims, a Junior at A.L. Brown High School, placed 9th in a statewide poetry competition sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council. Sims was the only student from Cabarrus or Rowan Counties to make the finals of the competition. More than 9,300 students from all over North Carolina took part in the contest.

Students who participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition studied and prepared poetry and read their selections in front of multiple judges from around the state. Banu Valladeres of the North Carolina Arts Council commented that the students who made the finals were extremely well prepared. “We are a better state for their dedication, and I congratulate all of them,” Valladeres said. Casey Goggin from Moore County was the overall winner of the competition and will represent North Carolina at the national level.
