Kannapolis Mayor, Darrell Hinnant, helped honor high school students during Kannapolis City Schools’ second annual COLLEGE AND CAREER SIGNING DAY. The event highlighted seniors from A.L. Brown High School who graduated from an innovative apprenticeship program sponsored by Wayne Brothers Construction and showcased A.L. Brown seniors who announced where they will attend college or enter the military or workforce after they graduate in June.

Eleven A.L. Brown High School students signed letters of intent to enter the workforce at Wayne Brothers Construction Company after completing the Wayne Brothers, Incorporated pre-apprenticeship program. The program gives students on-the-job training and guarantees them employment after graduation if they complete pre-apprenticeship program. It also pays the students’ college tuition expenses if they choose to continue their education. One of the students that graduated from the pre-apprenticeship program was A.L. Brown student, Alex Nunez. He was recently honored as the state of North Carolina’s top student apprentice.

Through partnerships that KCS has with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, KCS students receive career training and professional credentials while still in high school. The career credentials that students earn make them eligible to enter jobs after high school and allow local businesses to fill available jobs with highly skilled employees.

In addition to the Wayne Brothers’ pre-apprenticeship graduation event, KCS also held a College Signing ceremony at A.L. Brown High School. Students from A.L. Brown High School’s Class of 2019 signed letters of intent to attend colleges and universities from all over the country.

Representatives from area businesses, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, the Centralina Workforce Development Board, Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, NC Manufacturing Institute, and other community leaders attended the College & Career Signing events.
