Fred L. Wilson Elementary School will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special reunion for former students and staff. The school will host the event on Sunday, November 4th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Fred L. Wilson Elementary is located at 1401 Pine Street in Kannapolis.

All former Fred L. Wilson Elementary students and staff are invited to attend the drop-in event on Sunday, November 4th. There will be light refreshments available as well as tours of the school. There also will be past yearbooks on display along with memorabilia from the school’s 50 years.

“Fred L. Wilson Elementary is a very special place,” says retired principal, Nancy Barbee. “It’s a wonderful neighborhood school, and I’m excited about celebrating the school’s history and seeing former students and staff.” Barbee served as principal of Fred L. Wilson Elementary from 1992 to 2004. She is helping to coordinate the reunion along with current Fred L. Wilson principal, Dr. Mandi Campbell and her staff.

Fred L. Wilson Elementary opened in the fall of 1968. It was named after Cannon Mills’ General Manager, Mr. Fred L. Wilson. Wilson lived in Kannapolis for more than 50 years and was active in the community. He was Chairman of the Kannapolis City Board of Education from 1948 until 1961 and later served on the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina. He also was as a member of North Carolina State University’s Board of Trustees. Fred L. Wilson graduated from NCSU with a degree in Textile Manufacturing. Fred L. Wilson was a member of the Kannapolis Rotary Club and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also was active as a volunteer with the YMCA and a member of First Baptist Church. Among the items on display at the reunion will be a special video about the life of Fred L. Wilson that was made by his daughter, Jane Curran.
