The Kannapolis Board of Education was proud to recognize outstanding representatives from G.W. Carver Elementary School during its December board meeting. We are very grateful to the Mary Beth Burgess State Farm Insurance Agency for donating $100 to the G.W. Carver library in appreciation of the honorees.

  • Dulce Sierra Rodriguez:  Dulce Sierra Rodriguez is a 2nd grader at G.W. Carver who strives to be the best student possible. She is full of life and happiness and walks into school each day with a big smile and a positive attitude towards learning and her fellow classmates. She is extremely hard working and an excellent role model. Her teachers say she displays character traits such as integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, and moral courage. However, more than anything else, they say Dulce treats everyone else the way that she wants to be treated, and she epitomizes every aspect of goodness.

  • Bryson Waldroup:  Bryson Waldroup is a 3rd grader who has amazing creativity. He comes to school excited to learn and wants to work with his peers to solve problems. No matter what the task, Bryson consistently sets high expectations for himself while also trying to help other students. His media and technology teacher, Mrs. Willi, said, “Without a doubt, Bryson is one of only a handful of students I’ve worked with who thinks beyond the status quo. He constantly forces himself to look at things in a different way and is able to share those ideas with his classmates in ways they understand.” He is an amazing young man who is sure to find great success.

  • Kimball Lutheran Church: If strong community relationships help create successful schools, G.W. Carver is well on its way thanks to support from Kimball Lutheran Church. Kimball has been instrumental in helping G.W. Carver establish itself as a new elementary school even before the doors opened in August. Volunteers devoted countless hours helping G.W. Carver complete important tasks so the school would be ready to open after building updates were finished. Just some of the things Kimball’s volunteers did include shelving hundreds of new books, sorting and organizing multiple reading kits, donating 200 complete uniform sets and winter coats, hosting a BBQ fundraiser to help with school needs, providing a homemade hot breakfast for staff on the opening workday, and providing greeters and guides for Open House so staff could spend time getting to know parents and students in the classrooms. Carver students and staff appreciate the time, energy, and effort Kimball has given to ensure the school’s success.

  •  Gerald Hollis:  It is never easy to walk into another person’s classroom and educate the future, but somehow Gerald Hollis achieves this time and time again. He goes the extra mile to take half-day sub assignments, which keeps G.W. Carver’s support staff in their regular classrooms. That allows the school to stay on its regular schedule and not disrupt other classes. Gerald is more than happy to serve in whatever capacity he is needed, and he takes advantage of each opportunity to build relationships with students in the class. It is his spirit of giving and his generous heart that set him above the rest.

  • Toni Davis:  Toni is an amazing Instructional Assistant who has gone above and beyond to ensure the success of Carver Elementary. No matter the need, Toni is always ready to jump in and help. She completes any job quickly, efficiently, and with a positive attitude. She has willingly stepped in to cover classrooms when people are absent; she regularly drives a school bus, and she happily pulls small groups for intervention services. What sets her apart is her genuine care about each child’s success and her ability to develop a plan to address each student’s needs. She shows tremendous patience and gets to know her students so they know she truly cares. She has high expectations and makes sure every child understands. Her calm, nurturing voice helps students feel safe and take risks with their learning, which helps them reach high levels of success.

  • Kim Dean:  Kim is an amazing Exceptional Children’s Resource teacher. From G.W. Carver’s first days of training to become an A-PLUS Arts Magnet School, Kim has gone above and beyond in collaboration, positivity, and student and staff impact. In a school filled with extraordinarily gifted educators, Kim rises to the top. Wherever Kim is seen by her colleagues, she is always on her way to help someone, whether it’s another teacher with a lesson or a student who might need a listening ear. More than anything, Kim is the educator you want to spend time with because her ideas are sound; her wisdom is impeccable, and her humor is infectious. Kim is beyond amazing in her craft, and we can all learn how to more deeply impact the teaching profession from spending time with her.
