After receiving construction updates from the contractor on the new Kannapolis Middle School building, the Kannapolis City Board of Education has voted to open the new KMS building to students just after the Martin Luther King holiday in January. The mid-January opening date will be approximately two weeks later than the January 3rd opening that was announced at the beginning of the school year.

The two week delay will allow workers to get all classrooms ready for students and to make sure HVAC units, kitchen appliances, and other equipment are all working properly. When middle school students and staff return to classes on January 2nd, they will keep the same schedule they have used for the first part of the school year. Sixth graders that have been attending the Eagles’ Nest at G.W. Carver Elementary School will continue to go to G.W. Carver through Friday, January 12th. Sixth grade students that have been using the KMS building on Oakwood Avenue will continue in their same classrooms until the Martin Luther King holiday. All 7th and 8th graders will stay in their regular classrooms through January 12th. During the week of January 15th, the new KMS building will open for students.

School board chairman, Todd Adams, says the new timetable is needed to make sure things are fully ready for students. “The building is very close to being done,” said Adams. “We had hoped to make the move over the Christmas break. However, we want to make sure there is enough time to check out equipment and make sure things are working properly before we have students in the building. Making the move after the Martin Luther King holiday will allow us to do that.  We appreciate the dedication of KCS staff to make new timetable work, and we’re excited that we will be able to begin using the new building in January.”

KMS students and staff will return to school on Tuesday, January 2nd. They will follow the same routine they have used since the start of the school year and keep that schedule through Friday, January 12th. As soon as school ends on January 12th, KCS staff will begin transferring books, furniture, and materials to the new KMS building. KCS also will set up some furniture and equipment in the new building in early January to make the move faster and easier over the Martin Luther King holiday.

The process of moving will continue through the weekend of January 13th and 14th and into the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday, January 15th. Tuesday, January 16th is a Teacher Work Day throughout KCS and will also be used to continue the moving and set-up. On Wednesday, January 17th, KMS students will be out of school to allow an additional day for moving and set-up. All other KCS students will return to classes on Wednesday, January 17th.

Thursday, January 18th will be an Open House day at Kannapolis Middle School during specific times that the school will communicate to KMS families. KMS students and parents will be able to visit the school to find their new classrooms and learn the new drop-off and pick-up procedures. All KMS students will keep the same core teachers they have had all year. The Open House will give them the opportunity to find their classrooms and tour the new school. Friday, January 19th will be the first day of classes for KMS students in the new building. Here is the schedule summary:

Through January 12:  KMS students and staff follow same routine that has been in place since the beginning of the school year.

Friday, January 12: The move into the new KMS building begins as soon as students are dismissed from school

Monday, January 15:  Martin Luther King Holiday

Tuesday, January 16:  Teacher Work Day for all KCS schools

Wednesday, January 17:  Teacher Work Day for KMS only. All other KCS students resume classes.

Thursday, January 18:  Open House for KMS students/families at times assigned by the school. Regular school day for all other KCS students.

Friday, January 19:  First day of classes in new KMS building

Kannapolis Middle School staff will communicate with KMS families to let them know the specific Open House schedule for January 18
th. Families should plan to attend the Open House to learn the new procedures for dropping off students each morning and picking them up each afternoon. Bus transportation for KMS students will not change with the move to the new school. All KMS students will continue riding the same buses they have ridden all year.

“We’re excited about being able to open the new school,” said KCS Superintendent, Dr. Chip Buckwell. “KMS families and staff have done a tremendous job adjusting to the changes this year, and I’m extremely grateful for their patience and support. I also appreciate everything the folks at G.W. Carver Elementary have done to help us through the transition process. The new Kannapolis Middle School building is a beautiful school that will give our kids outstanding resources, and we’re looking forward to opening it in January.”

The address of the new Kannapolis Middle School building is 1000 Virginia Dare Street. During morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, car riders will access the new building off Azalea Avenue. During regular school hours, access to the new KMS building will be off Virginia Dare Street. Visitors can continue to access the current KMS building using the entrance on Oakwood Avenue.
